Pregnancy Tip
July 5, 2005
As a contributor to MTV's ongoing feature of Britney Spears' dos-and-don'ts and did-you-knows of pregnancy I am pleased to present an exerpt of tip #10-Watch Out for Chubby Hubby

"Britney, it's not cute that Kevin Federline is getting a little belly along with yours” it could be serious. There's this thing called Couvade Syndrome, in which the male partner gets some of the same symptoms you do during pregnancy, and even a little after, thanks to your heavy-duty pheromones. [He] could also get morning sickness, cramps, cravings, frequent urination and even post-partum depression, if your wild hormonal shifts give him lower levels of testosterone and higher levels of estrogen, cortisol (a stress hormone) and prolactin (a milk-inducing hormone). It's a common problem, affecting one in three expectant couples, according to Dr. Robert Greene, author of "Perfect Balance" and the upcoming "Perfect Balance for Pregnancy," but usually misunderstood and called "sympathy pain" or "sympathetic pregnancy." However, it can be treated, especially if you want to make sure he's stable when you're not".

Hormone Replacement Therapy
July 18, 2005
Last week the Journal of the American Medical Association released the results of a study that shows that women with menopausal symptoms who start hormone replacement therapy are likely to experience the same symptoms once they stop taking the medication.

Thus far, the interpretation of those results are that this proves once and for all women should not take hormone replacement therapy at all because it fails to "cure" the problem.

I take serious issue with this study and the results are being interpreted. Of course women have a return of symptoms after they go off hormone replacement. The same thing would happen if a diabetic went off insulin, or if someone with a thyroid disorder went off their medication. These are ALL expressions of hormonal problems, so it confounds me that we're willing to treat some hormonal issues in an ongoing way, but not those imbalances that arise from menopause.

Based on cutting-edge research and science-based evidence, I believe menopausal symptoms arise as the result of hormones being out of balance relative to one another. And the health problems blamed on estrogen replacement come about not because a high level of estrogen itself is dangerous, but because levels of other hormones (usually testosterone) remain out of balance. All hormones operate like a finely balanced mobile and a shift in the level of one invariably affects the level of another, leading to symptoms or even serious problems. These "hormone whispers" are telling us that something about the body is out of balance and calls for treatment. Righting your hormone balance is the surest way to enjoy lifelong hormonal and wellness.
